A View from the Top: DJ to spend summer on roof in MPK for charity by Ali Lanyon Last year Page Mullane spent his entire summer perched on the roof of a bar in Long Beach. He bathed in a portable swimming pool with a hose and sat atop a lifeguard stand to greet passers-by. In the process he raised $77,000 for the United Way charity. Now this year he’s decided to do it again. Only this time he’s chosen to make a roof in Massapequa Park his home. Only June 17, Mullane, a 25-year-old D.J., will ascend to the top of Caffeine Records and Clothing store on Park Boulevard. He will stay there for 105 days, breaking his previous 100-day record for marathon rooftop sitting. This year his goal is to raise $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "Massapequa Park is such a close-knit community," Mullane said. "It’s a great area and we really like all the surrounding businesses." Mullane said the idea was inspired by his love for children, especially his five-year-old son, Steven. His close friend has a child who suffers from illness, so Mullane saw a way to help. "I’m only into charities for children," Mullane said. "The cause is very, very close to my heart." The weatherproof box where Mullane will live has already been constructed on top of Caffeine. This year’s rooftop living quarters will be more advanced than last year’s, including a phone, T.V., radio, computer, SEGA game system, microwave, complete portable bathroom including a shower, a small mattress, and a PA system to talk to people down on Park Boulevard. According to the Village, the construction of the box didn’t require a building permit because it is only a temporary structure. While Mullane can’t descend the roof for any reason, he will be allowed to have as many visitors as he wants. However, he said that the number of rooftop guests will be limited for safety reasons. He is scheduled to get down on September 29. Last year when he climbed down the ladder on October 15, Nassau County named it D.J. Page Day. The popular D.J. will play music for residents between noon and 1:00 p.m.. Mayor Camillo Giannattasio said he’s not concerned that the noise will present a problem for the Village. "He only plays music during the day and he assured us that he won’t create unneccessary noise," Giannattasio said. "People may actually be quieter at night because they’ll know that he’s up there." Giannattasio said that he is also not concerned that Mullane’s PA system will become a nuisance when he uses it to talk to well-wishers below. He also assured residents that the Village will protect the people. "If a problem does arise it will be quickly corrected," he said. Mullane will raise the money through sponsors and donations. He also has a group of 38 volunteers, called the "Street Team," who will drive around Nassau County and try to raise money. With the support of local businesses, Mullane said he would like to draw more attention to Park Boulevard "We want the whole community involved in this event...we’re inviting everyone to my "coming up" party on June 17," Mullane said. "It’s going to be a fun and crazy summer, and we won’t inconvenience anybody." One of the main events Mullane will be involved in is the Massapequa Park Craft Fair on August 18, 19, and 20. "There’s going to be a lot of stuff going on...we think we’re going to have a lot of celebrities come including people like Pauly Shore," Mullane said. "It’s a publicity stunt...but it’s a very good one," Giannattasio said. "If it puts ten dollars into the pockets of each of our merchants, it’s worth it." According to Mullane, the decision to do another "marathon roof sitting event" was made before the last one was even over. While he said he missed his freedom and little things like showering or going to the beach, he feels it is worth it. "I have like 75 more summers left in my life, so giving up one of two isn’t a big deal," Mullane said. If you’d like to make a donation to the Rooftop D.J., you can stop by Caffeine or contact the Make-A-Wish foundation. You can also visit Mullane’s website, www.RocktheRoof.com. "We’re going to make Park Bouelvard famous...we’re going to put it on the map," Mullane said.
