Residents allowed to remove signs on phone polls In spring, the trees sprout leaves, but many also sprout signs advertising yard sales, lost pets and the like. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Christine J. Preston reminds residents that they don’t have to put up with the unsightliness of signs and handbills posted on trees and utility poles and trees. "There is a county-wide ordinance that not only prohibits the posting of handbills, posters, banners or any printed or written notices on utility poles, trees, traffic light poles, fire hydrants and other public property, but specifically allows any person to remove anything that has been posted in violation of the ordinance," Councilwoman Preston explained. "Notices for yard sales, lost pets and other household-generated signs are among the signs prohibited by the ordinance. "Many people, including myself, consider such signs a form of visual pollution," stated Councilwoman Preston. "Posters and handbills slapped on trees and utility poles detract from the visual ambiance of our communities. This ordinance gives residents the leverage they need to take down the offending posters and, hopefully, will serve as a deterrent to those who may be considering putting them up." The Councilwoman noted that a summons can be issued to anyone caught in the act of putting up a sign in violation of the county ordinance.
