Jonathan Klomp of Plainedge High School named "Distinguished Teacher" of 2005

Jonathan Klomp of Plainedge High School has been named a "Distinguished Teacher of 2005" by the Harvard Club of Long Island.

One of a dozen teachers from across Long Island to receive this award — for which over one hundred were nominated,Klomp was honored at a ceremony on April 16 at the HCLI’s annual University Relations Brunch. Following the ceremony, eminent cultural historian Professor David Hall of the Harvard Divinity School gave a short lecture.

"In a period when news about education on the island is often negative, detailing failed budgets, adult malfeasance, administrative corruption," explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, president of the Harvard Club of Long Island, "the HCLI wants to recognize and honor a few unsung heroes who expend uncounted hours and vast stores of energy first to raise the aspirations of our youth and then to help them accomplish dreams."

Klomp, who is supervisor of academics and teaches social studies at Plainedge High School, has taught for four years in the school district and taught for five years previously. He also has coached basketball and enjoys playing basketball and tennis.

Nominated by a former student who now attends Harvard College, Klomp has been described as critical to "reshaping the social studies department. He is a down-to-earth guy whom I can talk to about anything, not just school. He even helped me find an engineering internship . . . . I still meet with him during vacations to have lunch and catch up. He’s dedicated and inspiring."

Dr. John Richman, Superintendent of Plainedge Schools described Klomp as an "outstanding teacher" who "clearly loves his subject" and passes that enthusiasm to his students.
