Packard schedules Lunar watch for this Friday

Plainedge’s Packard Middle School’s sixth grade weather club will host their second Lunar Watch, Friday, April 6, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Weather permitting, those attending will be able to view the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, the Orion Nebula and a variety of other celestial objects through telescopes set up outside the middle school. Since it will be Daylight Saving Time, it will also be possible to view the sun through special filtering devices.

The Lunar Watch is hosted by the weather club students who have been trained by teachers Jessica Kiernan and Robert Link to assist visitors in locating the objects in the sky. The Plainedge Planetarium will also be open and teacher Steve Russo will be hosting tours of the Planetarium.

Lunar Watch is free and open to the public. Last year’s event drew approximately 400 people on an evening with the wind chill about 16 degrees. Hopefully, the weather in April will be far more promising.
