Volunteer now for TOBAY Dune Stabilization project

2002-01-02 / Events & Calendar

Volunteers who are looking for a worthwhile project to kick off the new year are invited to join Oyster Bay Town crews and other concerned individuals on Saturday, January 19, at 10 a.m. for the 14th annual Dune Stabilization program at Tobay Beach.

"Since its inception in 1989, the dune stabilization program has been a very popular volunteer project for residents of all ages," Town Supervisor John Venditto stated. "They know their efforts are helping protect the dune line from erosion, thus ensuring that the dunes and the beach will be preserved for their enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.

"This year, while some recycled Christmas trees will be ‘planted,’ the emphasis will be on dune grass," the Supervisor continued. "The Town has found the dune grass to be especially beneficial in stabilizing the dunes. Like the trees the grass helps hold and catch the sand.

"Whether you’re planting trees or grass, volunteers can look forward to a few hours of work and fun," Supervisor Venditto emphasized. "You will join Town officials and crews and other volunteers in stacking the discarded Christmas trees and planting grass in the dunes. Coffee, hot chocolate, clam chowder and donuts provided by generous donors will be ready and waiting. Once your planting is done, you will leave with the good feeling that comes from knowing you have performed a valuable environmental service."

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Department of Public Works, Environmental Control Division, at 677-5853.
