Cynar honored by Cornell lacrosse Justin Cynar, a 1998 Massapequa High School graduate and 2002 Cornell graduate closed his college lacrosse career at an awards ceremony held at Cornell University when he was presented with the Dr. Ray Van Orman Memorial Award as the Cornell lacrosse team’s Most Valuable Player for 2002. The award caps a stellar career that saw Cynar selected Collegiate All-American for a third time in June and as Cornell University’s Outstanding Athlete for 2002. As the Cornell goalkeeper, Cynar led the nation’s top lacrosse defensive unit in 2002 that allowed only 7.33 goals per game. A four-year starter for Cornell, Cynar was among the top five goalies in goals against average for 2002, 2001 and 2000. He led the Cornell team in its decisive defeats of national champions Syracuse University in 2000 and 2002 that helped lift Cornell to the NCAA play-offs in both years, reaching the quarter finals this past May. Cynar was selected the team’s top defensive player in 2001 and MVP for the first time in 2000. The three time All-American was a three time All-Ivy selection, a finalist for the U.S. lacrosse team for the 2002 World Games and a finalist and the only goalie nominated for the Tewaaraton Trophy, presented to the nation’s top lacrosse player. Cynar graduated in June from Cornell with a degree in business management and applied economics and was selected in the second round of the college draft by the Baltimore Bayhawks of the Major Lacrosse League under player/coach Gary Gait. He currently is an active player with the Bridgeport Barrage and works in the marketing and finance field on Long Island.
