When former Amityville Village Mayor Emil Pavlik first took office, one of the first people to meet with him was Kendall Muncy, the Village’s Superintendent of Public Works. Muncy wanted to know, recalled Pavlik, if he was being replaced.
"I told him he knew more about taking care of the roads than anyone I knew and that I felt fortunate to have him."
Muncy served for another 10-plus years as superintendent, and during that time said Pavlik, was the one to call whenever there was a storm or emergency.
Kendall Muncy died August 17, 2003. He was 79 years old.
Mr. Muncy was born in Amityville to Donald and Frieda Muncy. For many years, he was the owner and operator of Muncy Excavating and a member of Local 138. He was also a longtime member of the Amityville Fire Department, past president of the Amityville Kiwanis and a former member of the Amityville School Board. He was also a veteran of World War II.
"He was straight forward and always supported his men," said Pavlik. "He always called me Mayor, except if he had to tell me something that he thought I didn’t want to hear. Then he’d begin the conversation by calling me by my first name."
During those times, Muncy would generally outline a problem to Pavlik, recommend a solution and give an estimate of the cost. "He was great and watched out for taxpayers’ money sometimes better than the board," said Pavlik. "He’d even spend his Saturdays going to garage sales looking for tools."
Mr. Muncy is survived by his wife Adele and his children, Douglas and his wife Susan, Dianne Smith and her husband Ron, and Todd and his wife Darlene; his stepchildren Gregory Creamer and his wife Mary, Adrienne Gardiner and her husband David. In addition, he is survived by his sisters Shirley Wade and her husband William Jr., and Berenice Giordano and her husband Thomas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His parents and a sister, Lucille Kennedy, predeceased him.
Mr. Muncy reposed at the Powell Funeral Home, 67 Broadway, Amityville. Fire Department services were held there Tuesday night, August 19. A funeral mass was said at St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, Amityville. Interment was in Amityville Cemetery. The family has requested that donations in Mr. Muncy’s name be made to St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church Parish Outreach, 37 Union Ave., Amityville, NY 11701.
