Massapequa Philharmonic to start off season
with violinist Michi Wiancko Oct. 18th
The Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of guest conductor David Leibowitz, begins its 21st season with violinist Michi Wiancko, performing Brahms Violin concerto in D-Major on Saturday evening, October 18, 8:30 p.m. at the Berner Middle School, Carmans Mill Road, Massapequa. The orchestral selections include Weber’s Euryanthe Overture and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G-Major.
Violinist Michi Wiancko, born in California, began violin at age three and graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with Donald Weilerstein. She recently earned her masters degree at Juilliard where she studied with Robert Mann. Wiancko has received awards from the American String Teachers Competition and the Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition, among others. Most recently she was a winner of the 2002 Concert Artists Guild International Competition.
The Massapequa Philharmonic is composed of about 70 local musicians and is one of the largest orchestras on Long Island. Guest conductor David Leibowitz, received his MA from CUNY’s Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College, where his main studies were in oboe, conducting and composition. He also studied conducting with Carlo Maria Giulini and Herbert Blomstedt and was a finalist in the International Masterplayers’ conducting Competition in Lugano, Switzerland in 1986. Leibowitz is the founder and current music director of the New York Repertory Orchestra, which is starting its 11th season.
