The Massapequa Board Buzz
The following is a summary of actions taken by the Massapequa Board of Education at its regularly scheduled meeting on June 3, 2004.
The Board of Education recognized:
•The Law Day Poster Winners in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. The Topeka Board of Education.
•The Foreign Language Students for Outstanding Performance on the National French, Italian, German, and Spanish Exams.
•NYSMMA All State Participants. Massapequa had the largest representation of any district in New York State.
•Robert Schilling, executive director for human resources and personnel, reviewed the District’s Code of Conduct and sought Board and public input.
In addition to taking action on specific financial and personnel items, the Board of Education received the following reports:
•Goal 1G - Monitor Extended Day Kindergarten. Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Robert Aloise reviewed the new extended day Kindergarten model, which has been quite successful.
•Field trips and Caumsett State Park. Options for the Caumsett field trip were discussed as an overnight vs. extended day trip.
Regarding new business the Board of Education:
•Authorized the sale of tax anticipation notes in an amount not to exceed $19,000,000.
•Authorized the Superintendent of Schools to issue notifications to recipients of tuition reimbursement grants for the 2004-05 school year and authorized the Assistant Superintendent for Business to compensate recipients upon satisfactory completion of the approved courses of study and the submission of proof of completion.
•Accepted the Professional Development Plan.
•Reappointed the employees whom the State had not completed initial fingerprinting clearance on during the first twenty days of employment.
•Accepted a donation of six writer’s workshop desks, 11 high resolution mobile presenters, subject related murals for the library and gym corridor, funding for the "Book of the Month" initiative and t-shirts for the entire student body promoting character education curriculum from the Fairfield PTA.
