The following is a summary of actions taken by the Massapequa Board of Education at its regularly scheduled meeting on June 24, 2004.

The Board of Education recognized:

• McKenna Students from all grades performed the new McKenna school song.

• The Varsity Golf Team – Long Island Champions.

In addition to acting on specific financial and personnel items, the Board of Education received reports regarding:

• The Superintendent’s Report. Highlighted were National History Day participants and student success on foreign language National exams.

• Goal 1C – Implement & Monitor the 6th Grade Departmentalization Initiative to ensure consistency in curriculum, instruction, and assessments in the four major academic areas among all six elementary buildings.

• Regents Skills – A proposal to place seventh grade Regents skills pupils into Regents classes was discussed.

• Results of Attendance Task Force Review, including the implementation of a Superintendent’s regulation to further define procedures established in the Board’s Attendance policy.

Regarding new business the Board of Education:

• Accepted the revisions to the district’s Code of Conduct.

• Discussed revisions to Student Privacy Policy, Student Awards Policy, Drug Free Work Place Policy, Drug and Alcohol Abuse Policy, Staff Complaints and Grievances Policy, Student Complaints and Grievances Policy, Suspected Child Abuse and Maltreatment Policy, Open Campus Policy.

• Accepted a donation in the amount of $2,500 for the purchase of library furniture and $1,000 for the purchase of kindergarten writing centers for the Birch Lane Elementary School from the Birch Lane PTA.

• Accepted a donation of a microphone valued at $39.99 for the McKenna Elementary School from Mr. Michael Robinson.

• Authorized the Superintendent of Schools to issue notifications to tuition reimbursement recipients for the 2004-05 school year and authorized the Assistant Superintendent for Business to compensate recipients upon satisfactory completion of the approved courses of study and the submission of proof of completion in accordance with policy.

• Authorized the standardization of stage risers.

• Authorized Administration to discard old surplus furniture, textbooks and audio-visual equipment that is in poor condition and no longer has any educational or commercial value.

• Discussed the appointment of an interim principal at Unqua.

• Awarded a bid for Glazing Materials to Broadway Glass, GE Polymershapes, and Franklin Glass.

• Awarded a bid for Printing Services to A to Z Printing Ltd., Adplus Associates, Courier Printing, Emory Lithography, Presto Press, Print O Rama, Printers 3 Inc., and Tobay Printing.

• Awarded a bid for Security Guard Services to Anchor Security & Investigations.
