Massapequa Flash girls soccer team defends title winning tourney

Pat Carbonaro’s Massapequa Flash U-17 girl’s soccer team successfully defended their Waldbaum’s championship by defeating the Northport-Cow Harbor Blue Meanies 4-2 at Stony Brook University on recently.

The offense was provided by strikers Lisa McMillian and Cheryl Ziechowsky who both scored two goals and supported by inside half backs Lauren Carbonaro and Krista Giannattasio who recorded two assists each. The defense lead by goal keeper Kelly Fundus, sweeper Chelsea Friedman. Stopper Danielle Carbonaro and full back Sarah Wolfe dominated the game only allowing two goals at the very end.

The march to a second consecutive championship started last March when the Flash overcame a 1-0 half-time deficit to defeat the East Meadow Explosion 3-1 on goals by Lisa McMillian, Laura Beltranie and Laura Furman. The run continued in April with victories over the Valley Stream Angels and last year’s finalist the North Babylon Fusion.

In May, the Flash defeated a powerful Sachem squad in a semi-final match with Cheryl Ziechowsky scoring the games only goal converting a pass from winger Danielle Repetti.

The Flash may have played its last game until next spring when the team will seek an unprecedented third straight title but many of the players will be competing this fall. Lauren Carbonaro will be playing collegiate ball while Lisa McMillian, Danielle Repetti, Sarah Wolfe and Chelsea Friedman will be rejoining the Massapequa Varsity as the team seeks to defend its New York State Championship. Joining them from an undefeated junior varsity squad will be Cheryl Ziechowsky, Danielle Carbonaro and Kelly Fundus.
