Edward J. Matters, of Durham, North Carolina and formerly of North Massapequa, died August 23, 2004.

Mr. Matters was born in Queens, the son of the late Ed and Loretta DeRoss Matters. He was employed as senior sales coordinator for the Far East and Persian Gulf Exxon International prior to his retirement.

Mr. Matters is survived by his wife Virginia Matters; his daughters, Doreen Matters and Loretta Matters, both of Durham and his sons, James Matters and wife Barbara of Huntersville and Michael Matters and wife Peggy of Southington, Connecticut. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Steven Matters, Christine Matters and Thomas Matters; his great-grandchild Carter Matters; his sister Audrey Wittekind of Geneva, Illinois and sister-in-law Kathleen Brennan of Boynton Beach, Florida.

Mr. Matters reposed at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, 3863 Merrick Rd., Seaford. A funeral mass was said Thursday, August 26, 2004 at Our Lady of Lourdes, Massapequa Park. Memorial contributions to Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands, 4321 Medical Park Dr., Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704 would be appreciated.
