Disappointed with Nassau Democrats Dear Editor:

I am baffled at the punishment Legislator Dave Mejias got for taking a principled stand against the incredibly huge salary increase proposed in the legislature by Judy Jacobs and Peter Schmitt. Leg. Mejias showed leadership and displayed the best trait of a citizen-legislator. Leg. Mejias thinks of the stability of the county before he thinks of himself. To strip him of his committee leadership posts because of his oposition to raises is not how the Democratic leadership should be doing the

people’s work.

Leg. Mejias’s honesty and integrity does not warrant punishment. It deserves praise.

While a modest cost of living increase would not have many detractors, a 90 percent increase will find overwhelming opposition with the taxpayers of Nassau County. Presiding Officer Jacobs should rethink the pay increase plan and give Leg. Mejias his leadership positions back.

This punishment is reminiscent of how the republican leaders would deal with their members when they deviate from the party. The Democrats should be different. We expect better of them.
