In an effort to ensure the safety of his neighbors, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto is encouraging local residents to sign up to become an Auxiliary Police Officer. The Nassau County Auxiliary Police Section is currently conducting recruitment for new members, with October being Crime Prevention Month.

"The Auxiliary Police Section of the Nassau County Police Department is looking for community-minded residents interested in volunteering their time to serve as officers," Supervisor Venditto said. "These individuals can help protect the great quality of life we enjoy throughout the Town of Oyster Bay."

The Auxiliary Police was established pursuant to provisions of the Civil Defense act of 1951 and is composed of civic-minded residents of the community who work together to improve the level of safety and security in their community. The presence of the Auxiliary Police, in uniform and on patrol in marked police units, has been proven to reduce vandalism and other crimes in the community.

The Supervisor added that Auxiliary Police Officers also serve during disasters and other emergencies. Many units ask officers to volunteer as little as one night a week. In addition to the self-satisfaction in knowing that you are serving your community, Supervisor Venditto added there are many benefits affiliated with becoming an Auxiliary Police Officer.

"Being a volunteer provides excellent experience for those considering a career in law enforcement," the Supervisor said. "Many local colleges also give credits to criminal justice majors who successfully complete the Auxiliary Police basic training course at the Police Academy."

Members of the Auxiliary Police attend and complete a 19-session basic training course given at the Nassau County Police Academy. Training includes peace officer powers, New York State Penal Law, hazardous materials awareness, baton training, blood-borne pathogens, basic first aid/CPR, traffic and pedestrian control, and response to critical incidents.

"Those interested in applying must be at least 18 years of age, be a resident of Nassau County, be a citizen of the United States, have a valid New York State driver’s license and must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.," Supervisor Venditto said. "Applicants must also be of good moral character without a felony conviction (a misdemeanor conviction may also prevent acceptance). They must also have no more than one alcohol-related driving offense and must pass a physical examination. In addition, applicants must submit to fingerprinting, consent to a background investigation and are required to submit to a drug test and be willing to submit to a psychological exam."

Local units currently seeking members include those in Syosset, Jericho, Hicksville, Farmingdale, Massapequa, Massapequa Park, Plainview, Bayville, Sea Cliff, Brookville and Bayville. If you have any questions about the Auxiliary Police or would like to join the ranks of the dedicated members serving their community, please call 573-7521.
