Hyman Schaffer, who owned Janst Electric Company and lived in Massapequa for 51 years, died on February 11, 2005 after a short battle with colon cancer. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Schaffer, an electrician who ran his own business, was known for his dedication to his customers. He was also a close friend of former Massapequa Post newspaper founder and publisher, Ira Cahn.

"Whenever Ira had an electrical problem he would call my dad," said Mr. Schaffer’s son Steve, recalling the days when the newspaper used a Linotype machine. "Sometimes it was during the night when the paper was going to print and my father would go down there, sometimes with me too, in the middle of the night to fix the problem."

Mr. Schaffer was married to his wife, Elaine for 54 years, and they raised three children in their home on Surrey Lane.

During World War II, Mr. Schaffer served in the Army and was based in the South Pacific.

In the 1950s and 60s, he was active in the Massapequa Lions Club and held most posts. In the 1970s, he became a Union 25 Electrician. He retired and moved to Delray Beach, Florida in 1988.

As an amateur photographer, Mr. Schaffer took pictures for the local fire department during the 1970s, for which his son, Steve, served as a firefighter.

Mr. Schaffer leaves behind his wife Elaine; his son Steve Schaffer of Lecanto, Florida; his daughter Janet and her husband John of Hemet, California; and his daughter Carol and her husband of Delray Beach, Florida. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, John Jr., Sherrill, Brandon and Shala.

He reposed at the Riverside Gordon Funeral Home, Delray Beach, Florida with interment at the Eternal Light Cemetery in Boynton Beach Florida.
