Fairfield elementary wins third place in nationwide "Red Ribbons to Washington" campaign
The Bureau for At-Risk Youth recently announced the results of their 2004 Red Ribbons to Washington campaign. Traditionally, Red Ribbon Week is celebrated in schools throughout the country, however this unique campaign challenges students to expand the event beyond school walls. In an effort to establish a "no drug use" standard in the community, students are encouraged to ask relatives, neighbors, local businesses and civil servants to sign ribbons stating their commitment to be drug-free.
During the 2004 Red Ribbon Week, hundreds of thousands of people throughout the country participated in the campaign and pledged to be drug-free. After an overwhelming response by communities who sent in pledges, The Bureau for At-Risk Youth announced that Fairfield Elementary School, Massapequa, submitting 2,706 signed pledges, was awarded the third place prize for collecting the second highest total of non-duplicated signed pledges in the nation. Skylar Stimmel, a fifth grade student in Mrs. Raskin’s class submitted the most signed non-duplicated pledges. As a result, the Fairfield School won a $500 coupon for drug education materials from the Bureau for At-Risk Youth catalog. These materials will be used as part of Fairfield’s Character Education program highlighting the character traits emphasized at Fairfield.
