The Massapequa Board Buzz

The following is a summary of actions taken by the Massapequa Board of Education at its regularly scheduled meeting on November 17, 2005.

In addition to acting on specific financial and personnel items, the Board of Education received reports regarding the following:

•Dr. Flaherty described notable achievements and activities occurring throughout the district including the U.S. Dept. of Education’s visit to East Lake School for achieving Blue Ribbon status and Barbara Devoti’s receipt of the Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the Year award.

•The Board received an extensive report from the independent auditor, who commended the Board on the district’s financial strength, organization of the business office, and strong internal controls. The report also provided recommendations for further strengthening of the district’s computer controls.

Regarding new business the Board of Education:

•Considered and approved the 2006-07 School Calendar which is now available on the district website at www.msd.k12.ny.us.

•Authorized, due to increased enrollment at the secondary level, the addition of a .1 FTE contingency teacher for the duration of the 2005/06 school year.

•Recognized November 18 as School Related Professionals Recognition Day.

•Accepted a donation of a 1992 Ford Taurus for use by the MHS Technology Department.

•Appointed the Superintendent of Schools to certify District payrolls.

•Approved the appropriation adjustments for the 2005-06 school year in the amount of $384,564 to purchase new textbooks.

•Accepted a bid on musical instruments.
