Tattoos in violation for children under 18 With warmer days and summer clothes coming into fashion, many teenagers are considering dressing their bodies with a colorful tattoo. The Nassau County Department of Health reminds residents that it is a violation of the New York State Penal Code to tattoo anyone under the age of 18, even with parental permission. To protect residents against infections and possible diseases, the Nassau County Department of Health reminds residents that all body-piercing and tattoo establishments should have on their staff only artists who have been issued a Nassau County Health Department Certificate. Artists without an appropriate certificate are in violation of Nassau County Law and are subject to a maximum fine of $3,000. Certified artists must complete a three-hour course which covers hygiene, sanitation and blood-borne pathogens, followed by a written examination. Before having a tattoo or other body-piercing procedure, ask to see the establishment’s Health Department Permit and the artist’s certification. The establishment’s permit is valid for only one year. The artist’s certification is valid for three years. Those individuals under 18 who wish to have body piercing must have a notarized letter by their parent or guardian. Any tattoo artist can file for an application and for information about a class at the Health Department. For information, call weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at 571-3680.
