Lockhart students in Massapequa come out
Sixth grade students at Lockhart Elementary School in Massapequa have been putting their math lessons to practical use this semester to learn life-long skills as they participated in Newsday’s Stock Market Game. Over 1,900 teams from schools across Long Island played the game, which allows students to buy and trade stock in a simulated stock market. Since the first week of the game, Lockhart students dominated and had many teams in the top ten rankings each week. For the first three weeks, the Pink Ladies, comprised of sixth graders Sam Wolf, Alyssa Kirschbaum, Christina Fiorinelli and Nina Pisciotta were in first place. They continued to be ranked in the first top ten from week four through week seven as they sent their "earnings" and returns to Newsday stock market game officials. Things turned around for the sixth grade Cutie Pies, (Alex Castaldo, Lauren Murphy, and Jill Nagorski), when they jumped from 580th place in week four to first place in week five, where they held strong until the end of the game. The final surprise came when the team’s final total was $139,484.46, a 42.17 percent return which earned them first place status in all categories – high school, junior high school, college and teacher participants. "We had a great time playing the game, and each week it became more interesting," stated sixth grade Lockhart math teacher Donna Vigliotti.
