SuozziÕs run for governor is good for DemocracyÑand L.I.
Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi’s announcement this weekend that he is officially seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor brings an element of energy and pizzazz to the race for the state’s top office. We welcome it.
The only opposition that Suozzi faces within his own party is Attorney General Elliot Spitzer who has elevated his office, and his name recognition, through prosecuting some high-profile industry giants. He’s gone after insurance, telemarketers and others without regard to politics or party loyalties. He’s to be commended for that, despite some public pandering in the process, and undoubtedly has established himself as a no-nonsense public official.
Suozzi brings a different perspective to the table. He’s been the CEO and CFO for Nassau County, turning around a dire financial picture and reorganizing government to bring more efficiency. The outcomes have been positive, for the most part, and he’s established himself as a public official who understands how to run government.
Let’s not forget, too, that should Suozzi become Governor, the people of Long Island will have someone in that spot who truly understands the issues we face here, which can’t be a bad thing.
The very different backgrounds of these two Democrats should make for some lively discussions as we move through the political season and perhaps to a primary. Just how far Suozzi will be able to go depends on his ability now to light a political fire and generate enough political and financial support to see him through the blaze.
As for those concerned about his ability to run for office and continue to serve the people of Nassau County who have elected him, we say, don’t sweat it. Suozzi has already done the hard work of putting an administration into place in Nassau, setting a tone, and implementing policies. He should be able to both run for office and provide adequate oversight to ensure the running of government in Nassau County.
