Massapequa High School to celebrate 50th anniversary

Fifty four years ago, approximately 200 ninth graders moved into Massapequa High School at Eastlake. The Class of '56 was formed and spent two additional years at the Massapequa Park facility awaiting the completion of the community's new high school.

In September 1955 they opened MHS as seniors in a school comprised of grades 7-12. In June 1956 they became Massapequa High School's first graduating class.

Many members of the class have stayed in touch over the years. It is interesting to note that close to 75 percent of the class have e-mail addresses that they are using extensively for the reunion. The committee has developed a special website to provide information about the weekend. at

In March of 2006, the Reunion Committee held its 6th meeting to finalize their plans for their 50th reunion. The celebration coincides with the High School's celebration of the 50th Anniversary Year of the opening of the Massapequa High School.

The festivities will begin on Thursday, May 4 with a 6 p.m. get-together at Dick and Dora's. MHS Vice Principal Bob Piotrowski attended the meeting and advised that arrangements for their Friday, May 5, noon to 2 p.m., tour/ luncheon of Massapequa High School have been completed.

Reunion chairman John Kelley reported that more than 125 alumni and guests have subscribed to attend the event to be held on Friday, May 5 reunion dinner at the Riviera, 7 to 12 p.m.

The committee also indicated that plans for the Saturday, May 6, noon picnic were in place. The committee plans to hold the event at the James Caples Memorial Park Kiwanis

Pavillion in Amityville.
