Massapequa Boys Varsity Basketball season wrap-up
The Massapequa Chiefs boys varsity basketball team had an excellent regular season. The team went 11-1 in their conference to become the Nassau Conference AA-II champions.
"It was a great year," said Massapequa head coach Martin Voigt. "We had great senior leadership, especially from Anthony Errico, Keith Tyas and Evan Witt."
On their way to eleven conference wins, the Chiefs would play two games against Herricks, Long Beach, Oceanside, Hicksville and Farmingdale and win both games against each of those teams. Massapequa also played Freeport twice, losing the first contest in Massapequa and then winning later in the season at Freeport. Massapequa's loss against Freeport would be the only time that the Chiefs would be defeated within their conference during the regular season. Although, Massapequa avenged that first defeat to Freeport, it would be a harbinger of what was to come in the playoffs
The Chiefs entered the playoffs with high expectations after winning the conference title. However, they would have to play Freeport in their first game. In that playoff game, the Chiefs offense struggled. Freeport opened up a tenpoint lead by halftime and that would be too much for Massapequa to overcome. Anthony Errico showed his senior leadership by scoring 21 points in an effort to carry his time forward. However, it would not be enough as Freeport held for a 45-39 victory, which ended Massapequa's season.
In addition to Errico, Tyas and Witt, Massapequa had two other seniors in Chris Blaskey and Matt Terrono. The remaining members will take the experience from this season and learn from it, as the Chiefs will try to repeat as conference champions next season.
The members of the 2005-06 Massapequa Chiefs are #23 Alex Arnold, #5 Matt Bayer, #13 Stephen Bentz, #10 Chris Blaskey, #12 Robert Daly, #14 Anthony Errico, #20 Sean Hehir, #15 Michael Lipori, #3 Kevin Pisciotta, #22 Matt Terrono, #24 Keith Tyas and #21 Evan Witt.
