Massapequa Sex offender caught in police web

Amityville Police arrested a Massapequa man June 20, charging him with an incident of forcible touching which took place at the Stop and Shop supermarket on Merrick Road inAmityville the day before. Police gave this account:

At approximately 8 p.m., July 19, a woman and her elderly mother were entering their vehicle at the supermarket when a man, later identified as Gary Roven, 53, of 5649B Merrick Rd., Massapequa, approached the older woman and told her she had a spider in her shoe. As the victim took off her shoes, the suspect began rubbing her foot with one hand while he had his other hand down the front of his pants. At that point the victim yelled at the suspect and he ran into the supermarket. The victim followed and notified the manager who called police and observed the subject exit the store and get into a vehicle and flee. When police arrived they were given the vehicle type and license plate number.

APO Glenn Slack responded to the address of the registered owner and observed Roven there who fit the description given to police by the victim. After police asked him if he had been at the supermarket the day before, he acknowledged that he had been and admitted that he had seen a woman "with a bug on her foot, which he tried to brush off.

He was placed under arrest and arraigned in Amityville Village Court. He will appear back in court to answer to the charges at a later date.
