Massapequa Post Office Dedicated in name of Postmaster Jerry Fiorenza
by Tiffany Elliott

Local officials, colleagues and family members of the late Jerry Fiorenza spoke about the former Postmaster at a dedication ceremony officially dedicating the Massapequa Post Office in his name.
How well thought of former Massapequa Postmaster Gerard "Jerry" Fiorenza was evident by the hoards of his loved ones, friends and co-workers attending a renaming ceremony on a beautiful mid-week morning October fourth.

The Office at 80 Killians Road in Massapequa will now be called the Gerard A. Fiorenza U.S. Post Office. Fiorenza served as the Postmaster at the office that sits just off of Sunrise Highway from 1997 until 2001 when he died of cancer. Prior to that he had been Postmaster at the Massapequa Park and Hewlett offices.

"He was a good man and a great public servant," said N.C. Legislator Peter Schmitt as a lone bagpiper played in the background.

Mr. Fiorenza was well regarded in the Massapequa community because of his work ethic and volunteer spirit, according to Congressman Peter King who sponsored the legislation for the renaming. He was an active member of Massapequa Chamber of Commerce, the Sons of Italy, the American Legion Post 1066, the Columbia Association and the Republican Club. He was also president of the New York State Chapter of the National Associations of Postmasters, the Postal Service's L.I. District Combined Federal Campaign Coordinator and, last but not least, a volunteer coach for many of his children's sports teams.

"His name lives on, his love of this community lives on and Massapequa is a better place because of Jerry," said N.Y.S. Assemblyman Joe Saladino, who said he knew him for many years through his work in the community.

Fiorenza's daughter, 19-year old Jessica, tearfully tried to find the words to describe how she felt about the ceremony that she and her family attended as honored guests.

"I'm just very proud of him. He would have loved this," she said smiling at all the people sitting under two huge white tents that were set up for the occasion. "I just wish he was here."

In his honor, a bench sits in front of the post office and the street next to the building was previously renamed "Fiorenza Way."

"Jerry was one of the most giving and helpful people I've ever met," said Saladino. "He had a heart that would deliver in rain, sleet or snow."

In addition to his daughter, Jessica, and many other loved ones, Mr. Fiorenza leaves behind his 23-year old son, Michael and his wife, Carol.
