Writer urges support for alternative energy sources to reduce dependency on foreign oil Dear Editor: One of the biggest problems our nation faces today is our dependency on foreign oil for our energy needs. There are a number of alternative solutions to meeting energy needs. Photo-electric is one way that has been used, but it needs to be improved by making it more efficient and economical to the consumer. Making the solar panels smaller (no bigger than five by ten), capable of producing 150 to 200 percent of the house's energy requirement and costing the homeowner no more than $20,000 would make photo-electric an appealing option for homeowners. This use of photo-electric energy would be a wise investment for oil and gas companies whose need for natural resources depends on limited and costly foreign oil. The government should assist by giving tax breaks needed for the research and development of this technology. As the product becomes readily available, new codes should require the installation of photo-electric panels on both new home and commercial development. Using the many other potential energy sources (wind power, hydro-power and bio-fuel products) would also relieve our country's dependency on foreign oil. Using these methods will produce a cleaner environment and halt the flow of American dollars to countries whose profits finance terrorist operations. Lawrence Baroletti
