Massapequa woman begins term as Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor

Sue Martin of Massapequa took the reigns as the Lieutenant Governor of the Long Island South Central Division of Kiwanis this month. Long Island South Central is a division of Kiwanis International that encompasses 17 different Kiwanis Clubs from Elmont to Massapequa. She is the fifth member of the Massapequa Kiwanis Club to serve as lieutenant governor in the last 50 years. The last lieutenant governor from the Massapequa Kiwanis Club was the late Al Prato who served as lieutenant governor from 1987-88.

Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time- locally, through Kiwanis Club sponsored activities and programs and globally through the Kiwanis International Worldwide Service Project and other worldwide initiatives. Kiwanis members are service minded men and women united in their commitment to and compassion for others.

Sue Martin has long been a civic leader in her community and joined the Massapequa Kiwanis Club in June 2000, quickly taking an active role. She became secretary of her club in 2001 and was selected Kiwanian of the Year soon after. She was elected vice president of her club in 2002 and became president in 2004. She received distinguished status as president which indicates the number of new members she brought into the club as well as having met other criteria involved in the distinguished designation. Sue has done all this while fighting Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic neurological disease that involves the central nervous system. "From day one of my Kiwanis life I was struck with the sense of brotherhood that I felt," said Martin. "I am so proud to be part of this family of people who realize the gifts we have been given and are willing to share that with others who are less fortunate."

As lieutenant governor, Sue will oversee the activities and functions of all the clubs in the division. The clubs in the Long Island South Central Division of Kiwanis are: Bellmore, East Meadow, Elmont, Franklin Square, Garden City, Hempstead, Lakeview, Levittown, Massapequa, Merrick, Nassau County Courthouses, Nassau University Medical Center, Seaford, Town Hall, Uniondale, Wantagh and West Hempstead. Sue has said that her goal as lieutenant governor will be to strengthen the clubs within the division.

"I have come to realize through my involvement with this amazing group of people that one can make a difference but together we truly impact," concluded Martin.
