Supervisor Venditto creates Commission on Youth Athletics

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto recently hosted the first meeting of the Supervisor's Commission on Youth Athletics, organized to help coaches, league officials and parents encourage participation in organized youth athletics.

"The Commission on Youth Athletics was created in an effort to develop and enhance a safe and positive athletic experience for the youth of the Town of Oyster Bay," Supervisor Venditto said. "The goal is to achieve this through participation that focuses on the development of skills, teamwork, fair play, good sportsmanship and citizenship regardless of skill or ability."

Supervisor Venditto noted that earlier this year, league officials from throughout the Town were contacted to participate in the Commission. A steering committee was formed and met recently to discuss how league officials can best develop, promote and encourage the ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and fair play among young athletes. These ideals will then be passed onto coaches.

"In addition to ensuring that coaches and athletes get the most from the athletic experience, our goal is to also

educate parents," Supervisor Venditto said. "The Commission has set some standards for leagues to follow to ensure that communication takes place on all levels."

The Supervisor noted that the first standard, a commitment to a healthy sports environment, places an expectation on parents to identify the appropriate environment for their child's sports experience, with the assistance of the league. Additional standards focus on subjects such as encouraging parents and coaches to recognize young athletes' needs, the expectation of being drug, tobacco and alcohol free and fair play.

"There is no greater joy for a parent than to see their youngster having fun and enjoying being a kid, whether it be on or off the playing field," Supervisor Venditto said. "I created the Supervisor's Commission on Youth Athletics to ensure that all children, regardless of age and ability, get fair play time and enjoy the fun of the game."
