LIBI hails Senate plan for workforce housing on LI A plan by the Nassau-Suffolk delegation in the State Senate to provide more workforce housing in the region was hailed today by leaders of the Long Island Builders Institute as "a home run that will help keep young people on Long Island." LIBI's President Alec Ornstein said, "This threepronged approach provides help for employees, combined with matching grants from their employers, to help put together down payments, assistance to homebuilders who use 'Smart Growth' concepts to provide workforce housing in all types of developments and help for new homeowners in rehabbing their homes. I think that's a home run that will help keep young people on Long Island." The new program, called Homeownership and Economic Stabilization for Long Island Program (HELP), was unveiled at a news conference with members of the Long Island State Senate delegation at Hofstra University. The state-funded program will be administered locally by the Long Island Housing Partnership in Hauppauge,. Ray Accetella, LIBI secretary, added, "The best thing about HELP is that it enlists buyers, employers and local governments as partners to work together to provide much-needed workforce housing. I am particularly excited about the provision that helps new homeowners with financing to rehab their homes. That's good for the homeowners and good for local neighborhoods."
The Long Island Builders Institute with more than 650 corporate members, is the region's largest association of homebuilders and associated businesses and has been in the forefront of advocacy for workforce housing in Nassau and Suffolk counties for the past several years. In 2005, the homebuilding and remodeling industries' economic impact on LI was $14.5 billion and generated more than 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.
