Local folks in the news

The Massapequa Chamber of Commerce held a retirement party for Gertrude Olin after 13 years of service.

Shown in the photo, Mrs. Olin accepts a citation from Town of Oyster Bay Rose Marie Walker surrounded by other local politicians.

To celebrate fire prevention week, Mrs. Andes fifth grade class at Eastplain School in Plainedge received a visit from Mr. Szillus, a New York City firefighter and parent of a student in the class. Most recently, Szillus served on the Air Force Reserves stationed in Iraq.

During the session, he talked with the students about what to do if you are home during a fire, how to put out a small fire, how to get out safely, First Aid procedures for burns, and the importance of having a family fire plan at home. He also discussed the importance of having working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in the home.

Shown in the photo are Mr. Szillus and students from Mrs. Andes fifth grade class during fire prevention week.
