Massapequa resident named 2006 Healthcare Hero
Sisalli was formally honored during the first annual Healthcare Heroes recognition reception at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, on October 12. Sisalli was recognized for her tireless dedication as a volunteer parent facilitator with Kindred Spirits, a support group offered through Winthrop's Diabetes Education Center. Established in 1985, the monthly group brings together parents of children living with type 1 diabetes. Sisalli began her partnership with the Center in 1995 after joining its toddler and preschool support group when her daughter was diagnosed at three. The Massapequa mother of four later enthusiastically agreed to serve as the parent facilitator, passionately serving the Center and community ever since. "For many Long Islanders, Kindred Spirits is a lifeline, bonding parents with others who understand what they are going through and how they are coping," said Virginia Peragallo- Dittko, RN, director of Winthrop's Diabetes Education Center. "Ann has helped more people than she could ever count. Setting a welcoming tone for Kindred Spirits, she comes prepared to every meeting with samples of new products and research literature to share and discuss. To the families of children with diabetes and the health professionals who serve them, Ann epitomizes the spirit embodied in the word 'hero.'"
Winthrop's Diabetes Education Center offers comprehensive educational and supportive programs for children and adults, including Kindred Spirits and the Ed Smith Mineola Lions Clubsponsored Kids Interested in Diabetes. For more information about the Center and its programs, call 663- 2350.
