Local woman likes her sports extreme
by Tiffany Elliott

If you are one of those people who feels guilty about never finding the time to exercise, you don't want to run into Amityville native Carolyn Kunkel. For Kunkel, exercise and athletics is not something she squeezes into a busy day, it's a 24-7 endeavor.

The 1992 Amityville Memorial High School graduate is a professional roller derby girl, snow boarder and mountain boarder. In her spare time she surfs on the Great South Bay, skateboards, plays soccer and still finds time to hold down several jobs.

"I come from an active family, so I've always done a lot of sports," said Kunkel, 32. Her sister also roller skates, skis and does karate.

"I don't think what I do is dangerous, though my family tells me to be careful all the time. It's just fun and I love to be outdoors."

Hailed as a "sexy sport chick" on the website of the same name, she is a member of so many teams, one wonders how she keeps her schedule straight.

Every winter she moves to Colorado to work as a professional snow boarder and competes in the XGames, as well as many other competitions in which she shreds snow and rules the half pipe. She works as a snowboarding instructor in Aspen Valley in the winter and in Switzerland during the summer.

Not only is she touted as the first woman to ride an all-terrain mountain board, which is a giant skateboard ridden over dirt and rocks but she also has been the U.S. Open Mountain boarder world champion for the past five years and is part of the MBS Mountain Board Women's Team.

As a member of the Mid Island Rolling Thundercats in the Long Island Roller Rebel league, she's known as C-Roll when she's pushing and punching her way around local rinks. In fact, the team just completed its first season and went undefeated until the Wicked Wheelers of the West beat them in the championship in Old Bethpage on October 14.

Self-taught in all of her competitive activities, and at the top her game in them all, she also spends time wake boarding, balance boarding and surfing. On her time off (which is "almost never" according to Kunkel) she spends time with her family, plays the guitar and drums and works. "Long Island is always home to me though...I spend as much time as I can in the summer surfing and being on the beach," said the competitive and world-traveling Kunkel.
