Red Thunder beats undefeated Merrick; Massapequa team heads to Division title game The Massapequa Red Thunder played another exciting game last week to beat undefeated Merrick 3-2. A win in this matchup would give the boys from Massapequa a chance at first place. With a large crowd at soccer park, Merrick scored in the first minutes to take a 1-0 lead. But, the Red Thunder would not be denied. The offense of Pat Trupiano, Joe Arceri, Justin Jakubowski kept the pressure on and off a long rebound Nick Vinberg blasted a bomb from almost half field that went over the goalie's head to tie the score. With minutes remaining in the half Merrick scored on a questionable play that gave them the lead at half. The Red Thunder knew there was still a half to play and the defense rose to the occasion. Ryan Dashkoff, Nick Leelum and Billy Fox played out of their usual positions to help keep Merrick scoreless. Nick Roth, who was great in goal in the first half was tripped in the penalty box and with his teammates cheering Nick Vinberg found the back of the net to tie the score. As usual, Thomas Kiernan and Chris Wood played lights out defense, just as they have done all year and Matt Eicher played his best game when it counted. Also, the play of Nick Roth and Dylan Boyle in goal was another reason why the Red Thunder have the number one defense in the division. With ten minutes to play, Nick Vinberg had another chance and he did not disappoint. On a direct kick from out past the box Merrick decided not to make a wall and Nick Vinberg made them pay with a perfect shot in the corner.
Massapequa held off Merick in the end for a 3- 2 win and as the boys crowded the field they still knew a victory next week will give them a division title.
