Commissioners Unopposed in Water District Elections
In Massapequa, Commissioner John F. Carsuo is running unopposed for his third election since 1995 in the 6.5-square miles district that serves 45,000 residents. "The water quality of Massapequa is better than ever," said Caruso, a 34-year Massapequa resident. "It's due to the fact that during the clean water act several years ago, we recycled drainage water into the aquifer (which made the water cleaner)." Caruso said he is also proud of the new educational center, which was developed after he proposed the idea, that will help teach young people how the community was years ago and how to keep the water clean. Caruso, who worked for the Town of Oyster Bay as the Commissioner of Public Works in water and sewage for nine years prior to coming to the water district, said after his reelection he will continue his work on the projects he believes are important.
The district operates with an annual budget of $5.15 million a year, through 2007. SOUTH FARMINGDALE Commissioners John Hirt and Kurt Ludwig are also running unopposed in the South Farmingdale Water District, which covers 5.4 square miles and serves 44,700 residents. Hirt, for a three year term and Ludwig for an unexpired one-year term. The district covers North Massapequa, South Farmingdale as well as parts of Bethpage and Seaford. Although their budget has an 8.5 percent increase this year, going from $3.8 million to $4.2 million in 2007, the additional spending will not be passed on to rate payers in the form of a tax-rate increase. Commissioner Hirt, who serves as the treasurer for the board in his first three-year term, has lived in South Farmingdale for 48 years. Since his time as commissioner, the department has integrated a new iron filtration plant and has improved the reading of water meters with innovative equipment.
Hirt who works as operations manager for Federal Express at JFK airport, is a 35-year member of the South Farmingdale Fire Department and a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran. Commissioner Ludwig is also running for reelection of an unexpired one-year term. In June of this year, he was appointed to the post held by 20-year Commissioner Gerard McCormack who died while in office. "Water is the lifeline of the community," said Ludwig who also expects to run again next year for a full three-year term. "It dovetails nicely with the public service work that I do." Ludwig, a resident of North Massapequa, has worked for the Town for the last 16 years in the Office of Public Information. He has been a North Massapequa Fire Department volunteer since 1989, and sits on it's board of directors. On Tuesday, December 12 residents will be asked to vote in their local elections at the following locations: Massapequa residents are asked to vote from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Water District, 84 Grand Ave.
South Farmingdale voters have two locations to choose from, the South Farmingdale Fire House #2 at Merritts and Beverly Roads or the North Massapequa Fire House on North Broadway and Albany Avenue. Both locations are open for voting from 4- 9 p.m.
