Jessica Merritt Griffiths: Descendent of original Farmindale family

Longtime West Islip resident Jessica Merritt Griffiths, a descendent of Englishman Thomas Powell who purchased 15-square miles of land, part of which became Farmingdale, died October 27, 2006 at her home. She was 82 years old.

Mrs. Merritt Griffiths, a Quaker who spent her life caring for her husband and home, was born January 2, 1924 in Farmingdale Village to Jesse and Mabel (Witte) Merritt, whom Merritts Road is named after.

She later became a dedicated wife and homemaker to her husband, Millard F. Griffiths and lived on West Sequams Drive in West Islip for many years.

She was a member of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, loved historical homes, classical music and gardening according to her family.

Mrs. Merritt Griffiths leaves behind her sister, Jean Hubbard; her nephews, Alan M. Thomas and his wife Julia, David A. and his wife Allison and Nathaniel and his wife Nora Hubbard; her great nieces and nephews, Christopher, Jeremy, Graham, Jennifer, Matthew, Natalia, Jonathan and Jesse Hubbard; her god children: Lynn and Erica Kiesewetter; as well as other loved ones and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Millard, in June of 1994.

Father Randolph Jon Germinder, rector, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Amityville, officiated at the funeral service held at Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, on November 2, 2006. Interment followed in Amityville Cemetery.
