Editorial Singing Christmas Carols in the Village square, taking holiday home tours, watching children gaze up adoringly at Santa and whispering their list of wishes in his ear, sipping hot chocolate with neighbors and friends at the annual tree lighting ceremonies- these are the things that make up the true meaning of the holidays. Yet, America's effective commercial marketers would have us believe it is all about shopping and spending money. And, so easily we get caught up in that deceit, and fill ourselves with dread and stress. This past weekend we had the opportunity of partaking in some of these community celebrations, and they were a wonderful reminder of what is important about the season of joy and peace. Certainly purchasing gifts for our friends and loved ones is an important part of what Christmas is all about, but we also have to remember to keep all of that in perspective. Don't be conned by the commercials and don't spend your time running from store to store in the mistaken hope of getting everything perfect. It won't happen and in the end you will be exhausted and disappointed.
Instead, limit your expectations and refocus and renew the holiday spirit in your home by sharing it in peace and love with family and friends.
