Ligia Rodriguez awarded Fulbright Scholar Grant

George P. LaRosa, officer-in-charge at Farmingdale State, has announced that Dr. Ligia Rodriguez, chairperson of the department of modern languages, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant through the Department of Education's 2006 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad. The award was given by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and the Secretary of Education.

A resident of Farmingdale, Professor Rodriguez traveled to Argentina and Uruguay during the summer. The five-week trip originated in Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where a group of 16 teachers from all over the United States met for a Pre-departure Orientation on June 29, 2006.They left for Argentina on July 1 and spent a week in Buenos Aires attending lectures by experts on Argentinean economy, politics, history, music, art, visiting museums and more. For the next two weeks they visited other cities and sights like the Iguazu Falls. For the final two weeks Dr.Rodriguez went to Uruguay and visited Punta del Este and other cities. She also attended conferences on diverse aspects of Uruguayan life.

As part of the Fulbright experience, Professor Rodriguez is currently working on a research project about the Guaran Indians of the region and the successful work the Jesuits did to protect them from Portuguese slave raids in the 17th and 18th century. She will be doing a presentation on this subject next year for the Farmingdale State Arts and Sciences Colloquium program.

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Under a cooperative agreement with the Bureau, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) assists in the administration of the Fulbright Scholar Program for faculty and professionals.
