Gardening at Howitt in Farmingdale

Warm spring days, careful planning and hard work brought a dream to reality. Based upon plans drawn up by Stu Goldstein, Joseph Bianca and Frank Hebron with funding from a Teacher Center Grant and the digging, leveling, planting, etc. of Brian Finlay’s Work Program Team, the Steve Kutch Memorial Garden came to life. Inspired by Kutch’s fondness for games, the garden has

two huge game boards: one for checkers/ chess and the other is a crossword puzzle grid. Behind the puzzle boards are beautiful annuals and perennials giving the entire area a beauty and serenity for all to enjoy.

On either side of the memorial garden there are flats laid out by the Work Program Team. Students from Mrs. Sullivan’s grade 6 and Ms. Giovacca’s Grade 8 science classes transplanted their seedlings begun indoors as part of a study of plants.

Aly Nelson, Chris Ruggiero, Emanuel Clarant, Joe Siegel, Cleo Brown, Sal Maran, and Jacques Dorsenville all took part in this effort.
