Frederick Pawel: N.C. Police Officer and longtime Massapequan

Decorated Korean War veteran and retired Nassau County Police Officer, Frederick Pawel died November 20, 2006. He was 78-years old.

Mr. Pawel lived in the Massapequa area for 35 years, first on Beach Road then on Biltmore Boulevard. He loved his community and donated his time whenever he could to make it a better place, according to his daughter.

At age 16, he volunteered with the Merchant Marines and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was based in Germany. For 26 years he worked as a Police Officer in Nassau County, first in the 7th precinct and then from the 2nd, where he retired as a Detective Lieutenant.

According to his wife of 53 years Alice, he was an avid reader and a “wonderful husband and father” who loved to take walks on Jones Beach.

Mr. Pawel leaves behind his wife, Alice of Massapequa; his daughters: Susan Thompson and her husband Jim of Massapequa Park, Lisa Beratis of Massapequa and Jenny Gillam and her husband David of Massapequa; his grandchildren: Courtney, Dan, Jamie, Lindsey, Jessica and Stephanie; his siblings: June Huber of Seaford and Arthur Reyer of Fort Pierce, Florida; as well as other loved ones and friends.

He reposed at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home, Inc., Seaford, on November 21, 2006. A religious service was held at the funeral home on November 22, 2006 followed by interment in Pinelawn Memorial Park.
