Massapequa resident named Junior Officer of the Year The Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group announced Lt. Cmdr. Peter Lawless as its selection for Junior Officer of the Year on December 4. A resident of Massapequa, Lawless is employed with The Associated Press as director of finance. Lawless, who has served in the Navy Reserve for more than 13 years, completed a seven-month deployment to Kuwait for a cargo-handling mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2006. While deployed Lawless served as the operations officer for NAVELSG’s Port Group CHARLIE and is credited in his nomination letter as the principal architect for effective strategy changes and applying new technology for port operations. He led 370 Sailors in the safe and expeditious movement of more than 40,000 pieces of cargo on time and without safety incident or loss in productivity in an inherently dangerous work environment. Additionally, his leadership style is described as “inspirational,” which is recognized as a prime motivator for his Sailors’ positive attitude in a demanding and stressful work environment. Lawless downplays his achievements and credits his Sailors. “There are many sailors that contributed to the successes we attained over the past year. It is the sailors who worked the marshalling yards, in many cases in arduous conditions, Lawless said, adding, “They worked the ships, moved the cargo, tracked every piece with impeccable precision, and performed the administrative tasks so we could focus on operations.”
Since returning home Lawless, who serves as the executive officer of Navy Cargo Handling Battalion Eight at Fort Dix, New Jersey, restructured his battalion’s command and control to enable faster response to operational and administrative requirements throughout each month.
