Albert Kunkel: devoted father and decorated veteran

Longtime Massapequa Park resident and Newsday employee Albert F. Kunkel died December 2, 2006. He was 94 years old and loved to spend time with his family.

Born in East Rockaway, he later lived on Linwood Place in the Village, raising his own family, for 52 years. A decorated World War II Army veteran, he was wounded in the “battle of the bulge” in Belgium and received a Purple Heart medal. For 38 years until his retirement he worked for Newsday as a printer.

Mr. Kunkel leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Mary; his daughters: Patricia Hickey and her husband Jon, Katherine Noga and her husband Richard and Alberta Dieffenbach and her husband Gene; his sonin law Danny Van Dine; his siblings: Adelaide O’Brien and Edward; his 16 grandchildren; 24 great grand- children; three great great grandchildren; as well as other loved ones and friends. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Lou Van Dine.

Mr. Kunkel reposed at the Massapequa Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Park Blvd., Massapequa Park on December 4 and 5, 2006. A Funeral Mass was held December 6 at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church, Massapequa Park followed by entombment in St. Charles Cemetery.
