MPK Village hires first full-time building inspector
by Tiffany Elliott

The Village of Massapequa Park recently announced the hiring of its first full-time building inspector, a move that Massapequa Park Village Mayor said will be both a cost-effective and efficient way for the Village to meet the needs of residents.

“The department wasn’t running as efficiently as we’d like and people weren’t being served so we decided to hire a full time person that will professionalize and modernize all aspects of the building department,” said Mayor James Altadonna, Jr. in discussing the change.

Although the Village had an inspector for many years, he was a per diem consultant, serving at a rate of $55 an hour. From November 1, 2005 to October 31, 2006 he was paid $53,666.25 and worked an average of 18.76 hours a week in addition to receiving $720 last year for mileage and attending several educational courses.

“Our new inspector is an obtainable source. He can attend any meetings that pertain to buildings without us having to pay extra,” said Altadonna about the new hiree, Mike Ryder.

Ryder will serve at an annual salary of $93,000.

“While this will initially drive up the budget Altadonna said he expects to see a savings in the long run because the Village and the department will be working more efficiently and the salary is inclusive of all responsibilities associated with the job. Ryder will also be eligible for retirement and health benefits.

The Town of Oyster Bay has six full-time building inspectors who earn between $53,300 or $62,209 depending on experience and seniority. They also receive health care, and retirement benefits and have a Town car.

The Village of Farmingdale has two part-time inspectors who each earn $31,190 a year, plus retirement and health benefits. They have use of a Village car for Village-related business only.

The Village of Amityville has had one full-time inspector for the past 11 years who earns $75,000 plus benefits, including retirement, and has a car to use only during working hours. Recently, however, the Village hired a part-time inspector at a salary of $20 an hour with a 17-hour week, maximum

As part of his duties Ryder will be required to attend zoning board meetings and other meetings as directed by the board at no additional compensation.

Ryder, who started November 1, works with two other people who make up the building department. He focuses on permits, building code violations, reviews all plans submitted for new structures and makes all the required inspections during the construction phase. Additionally, he works hand in hand with the zoning board, as well as doing plumbing and fence inspections.

Ryder, a Lynbrook resident who, prior to this, worked as the superintendent in the department of buildings for the Village of Lynbrook for three years, said that the fact he doesn’t live in the community is a plus.

“It’s a good change of pace for me, separating where I live and where I work,” he said. “It makes me impartial to all the decisions I make.”

“So far this is working out wonderfully,” said Altadonna. “He is extremely knowledgeable and every ounce of training that went into that stays with the Village.” Prior to this, Altadonna said that the Village would train a new employee, they’d stay for a short time and then they’d go to other municipalities. “This change will provide us with stability and expediency,” said Altadonna.

Although he’s only been on the job for less than two months, Ryder says the Village has already seen an improvement in how the department operates.

“I hear it all the time,” said Ryder. “People (who are building or need an inspector) say that they didn’t expect the Village to send anyone so soon, but in construction, timing is everything.”
