All 10 Massapequa High School fall teams recognized as “Scholar Athletes” by state
by Andrew Coen

Massapequa High School produced a large number of winning teams this past fall, including county titles for boys and girls soccer, girls cross country and girls volleyball and the Long Island championship for field hockey. But the athletes were not only successful on the field but also in the classroom. All of Massapequa fall sports teams were recently recognized as New York State Scholar Athlete teams for maintaining at least a combined 90 academic average while competing.

The five championship fall teams were honored at the Jan. 11 school board meeting at the high school auditorium for their on-the-field successes but Massapequa Athletic Director Igor Bishko pointed out how all of them had also achieved academic success. That brought a thunderous cheer from the large crowd in attendance. Every team featured academic award winners including 23 scholar athlete awards for the girl's soccer team.

"We're 10 for 10 so far," said Bishko of the academic success of all of Massapequa's fall teams. "It's a great tribute to the students and their parents."

"Tonight the board is very happy and pleased to honor so many outstanding students," said Massapequa school board president Arlene Martin. "I think Massapequa can be very proud. We have wonderful children."

The on-the-field successes were highlighted for the boys and girls soccer, field hockey, cross country and girls volleyball teams, with all players invited to attend with Nassau County championship. Tee-shirts were presented to all the students.

The girl's soccer team went 14-5 en route to their fourth straight county title. The squad also was recognized for their sportsmanship and behavior during games with the Nassau County Sportsmanship award.

"Their hard work and dedication to the sport paid off," said girls soccer coach Kerry Jacobs.

The boy's soccer squad also won the Nassau County title in 2006 and nearly captured the Long Island crown before giving up the winning goal with just five seconds remaining. "They represent Massapequa well," said boys soccer head coach Keith Stanley of his 2006 team.

The girl's volleyball team went 19-1 with a combined grade point average (GPA) of 95 during the 2006 season in route to their seventh straight Nassau County championship. Head Coach Carol Ann Habeeb-Kiel won her 200th game during the season and her squad finished third in the county for the sportsmanship award.

The girls cross country team went 12-1 and won their first county title since 1995 in this past season and in addition kept up well with their school work by combining for a 93.701 GPA. After winning the county title the Chiefs had the chance to compete in the states against some of the nation's best teams. "I couldn't tell you how proud I was to see them compete at such a high level," said cross country head coach Mike Lisa.

The Chief 's field hockey team had the most Cinderella run of all the fall teams rising from the dead after a 1-5 start to qualify for the playoffs where they posted wins over Baldwin East Meadow and a 10-1 Smithtown East squad to capture Nassau County and Long Island championship championships to give them the opportunity to compete in the state's. "This team overcame so many obstacles to achieve the success they had this season," said field hockey head coach Tisha Werner. "The girls never gave up."

Werner, along with Lisa and Habeeb-Kiel received Nassau County Coach of the years honor for their success in guiding the Chiefs this past season.
