AMVETS help deliver for Girl Scouts and troops

It all started as a school project at Berner Middle School in Massapequa. Teachers Christine Steck and Barbara Lowell coordinated the efforts of students who collected and wrapped fifty-one packages to send to our military personnel serving in Iraq. After delivering the packages to the post office it was determined, much to their dismay, that the Postal Services charged for shipping to servicemen who were serving in a war zone. The charge was $ 1,476.39.

The packages had to be returned to Berner and a new strategy had to be determined. James Koester the Department Chairperson contacted local veteran organizations. AMVETS Post 88 Chairman of "Adopt a Troop Fund" Richard Rossi responded that he would see what he could get done. He visited Massapequa Post Office and spoke with Postmaster Rae Culotta who stated that if the organization funded the postage, she would assist in rewrapping, addressing and would pick the packages up at the school. Rossi stated AMVETS would pay for the shipping through its "Adopt a Troop Fund."

When the Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor heard of the students plight, he made a contribution to assist with the postage. On Thursday January 11, 2007 the students posed for pictures with the packages, their teacher, representatives with AMVETS Post # 88 and TOB Supervisor John Venditto. The students were thanked for their efforts by the veterans and the Town Supervisor.
