First Responders need our help now

As we write this editorial, we have not had the opportunity to hear President George Bush's State of the Union Address. He will obviously speak about Iraq and America's role in the Middle East as we move into the future. He is also likely to discuss the First Responders on 9/11 and talk, we hope about what will be done to address some of their critical physical and mental health needs.

To date, not enough has been done and these heroes deserve more. They risked their lives to save others and to resurrect a beaten and demoralized country with their dedication, commitment and courage. Now it's time that the country return the favor.

Democrats, including New York's Senators Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer are calling upon Congress to provide funds for their care. We hope the President agrees. This is an issue that goes beyond political partisanship. It strikes at the very core of decency and responsibility.
