House fire in Village shakes up neighbors
"This could have happened to anyone. I heard that it started from fireplace embers put outside that were still lit," said one resident who would only give his name as John. "It just shows that you can never be too careful," he added as he walked past the large, two-story home. According to the Nassau County Fire Marshal, though, the exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation. The Massapequa Fire Department responded to a call at the house at 308 First Avenue at approximately 10 a.m., Thursday, January 18. The first responding units found the deck and the rear of the house ablaze. "It was a good thing that no one was home and we were able to save the house," said Massapequa Fire Chief Thomas Kennelly, who was in charge of the operations. The volunteers were able to rescue some pets, including rabbits, however one firefighter hurt his ankle while fighting the blaze. He was treated and released. The fire caused heavy damage to the rear of the home and some smoke and water damage to the interior. A few days after the incident, the only clue that a fire had taken place was a fire damage cleaning service's truck out front, and sheets of blue plastic covering the back of the house.
"It seems like there are more and more fires," said Joan Smith, a neighbor who was walking by with her dog. "I'm going to be extra careful now."
