Girl Scouts' drive helps support troops in Iraq
by Tracy Bongianni

Girl Scout Troop 2244 successfully raised more than $300 on January 6, 2007 when the Westfield Mall in Massapequa hosted the Girl Scout Council Cookie Kick Off to promote a cookie sale for the wounded soldiers in Iraq.

The troop rallied the public to participate in the cookie drive for the soldiers. This community service provides a much needed touch of home for those who have been wounded in combat, said organizers.

Kathy Kumpas, one of the parents who helped to organize the effort said it was a wonderful way to help support those American men and women who were serving their country and had been injured in Iraq.

A donation box was also available for those who wanted to send cookies to wounded soldiers in Iraq. In addition, Valentine's Day cards were provided for those who wanted to send good wishes.

The cookies are being sent to a Medivac in Ali Base, Iraq. Tim's Florist of Massapequa Park has been instrumental in helping the Girl Scouts get their cookies to the soldiers.

The members of troop 2244 are: Danielle Wilson, Shannon Burk, Isabel Rodriquez, Katie Kumpus, Cassie DeCuir, Jennifer Hahl, Kristina Regan, Emily Caufield, the troop leader is Colleen DeCuir. Other troops that aided in the cookie sale are: Brownie Troop 2430, Brownie Troop 2013, Girl Scout Troop 2069. Anyone who would like to help in the drive can contact any Brownie or Girl Scout and let them know that you would like to participate.
