Limited Edition to close its doors
by Tiffany Elliott

After 32 years in business the owners of The Limited Edition Store in Merrick have decided to shut its doors by the end of March.

The huge knickknack store at 2170 Sunrise Highway has many longtime customers far and wide who flock to collect Department 56 houses and Fenton Art Glass.

"We have the best customers in the world because they are so faithful. After all, we are a 'want it' store not a 'need it' store ," said co-owner Lenore Savetz of Oceanside who said their closing is bittersweet because she'll miss her customers and going to the location everyday.

"Customers have been crying, asking us not to close. They just love the store because we always have artists come in for free signings, among other things," she said adding that they haven't decided yet if they are also shutting down their website of eight years.

According to Savetz, a deciding factor in folding the gift and collectible business was the high taxes and insurance costs.

"Costs have gone crazy and honestly the cost of running the business is very high, we just can't meet it," said Savetz in a phone interview who said she went into business with her husband Buddy and Ruth Wolf of Freeport in 1975 after a small gift store in that same area was going out of business.

Passing down or selling the business isn't possible either, according to Savetz because the inventory costs are so high in the bric-a-brac business.

The large store, that sells the entire line of Boyds Bears, M.I. Hummel and Precious Moments figurines, among others, will be having special deals and raffles up until their inventory is gone.

"We're giving away $5,000 worth of prizes to people who visit," said Savetz who said although they are retiring they aren't moving away.

"People keep asking me if I am moving to Florida and the answer is no," she laughed .

The store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 800-645-2864 or go to:
