Plainedge High School hosts the Long Island String Festival

Plainedge High School was proud to host the Long Island String Festival Association's 51st Annual Concert on November 19. This year, over 42 schools and 280 students from across Nassau County participated in the festival.

L.I.S.F.A. is an organization committed to keeping string education and performance thriving on Long Island. Students are chosen to participate based on teacher recommendation and their N.Y.S.S.M.A. scores from the previous spring. Plainedge High School was fortunate to have six students chosen to play in the festival. In the 8th & 9th grade orchestra, Kimberleigh Costanzo, double bass and Julie-Ana Praetorius, viola, represented Plainedge. Michael Chin, Frank Chin and Verena Kim, all violinists, and Shane Clemans, double bassist performed with the senior orchestra.

The students began arriving at 3:15 on Friday, the 17th, and participated in a four-hour rehearsal that evening. On Saturday, the groups rehearsed for six hours. Members of the Plainedge chapter of Tri-M, the music honor society, were on hand throughout the course of the three-day festival. With the direction of Laura Ruotolo, the club's advisor, and Danielle Niera, chaperone, and Tri-M board members Matt Jeffreys, Chris Forst, Lauren Dodenhoff, Brittany Bory and Jonathan Sole, the students worked diligently to ensure that the festival went off without a hitch. Students set up seating in the rehearsal rooms, escorted the musicians to the audition rooms and chaperones from other schools to the hospitality room. They also sold pizza, drinks and candy to raise money for Tri-M, and helped the L.I.S.F.A. staff with t-shirt and sweatshirt sales.

At the concert, recognition was given to two students chosen to receive scholarship awards from L.I.S.F.A. Students were chosen based on musical achievement and recommendation of school and private instructors. The L.I.S.F.A. Memorial Scholarship was given to Anne Park, a senior from Herricks High School, and receiving the L.I.S.F.A. Studio Award was Kimberleigh Costanzo of Plainedge High School.

Plainedge Public Schools encompasses five schools - three elementary schools, Eastplain, Charles A. Schwarting, John H. West, a Middle and High School. The district serves 3,500 students.
