Editorial A story that appears in this week's paper, and another that appeared last week, outlines the Town of Oyster Bay's efforts to crack down on unscrupulous, defiant and neglectful landlords. The administration of Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto is to be commended for the actions it has taken. When a commercial building is used as a boarding house, or a single-family home for multiple families; and a landlord refuses to clean up his or her property to the extent that it is not only an esthetic problem but a health and safety problem as well, legal action is often the only avenue of recourse for the municipality. However, it is not an easy process to move against property owners for these violations. It takes time, patience, consistency and money, so much so that many municipalities often push these problems aside, hoping they will simply go away. More often than not, the problems continue and become worse, impacting on real property values and the quality of life of the community. Town of Oyster Bay officials recognize this and have taken the tough road to protect residents and taxpayers. They deserve support for a road less traveled by because it makes all the difference.
