Saltzman Elementary School awarded literacy grant from Scholastic Books

Kathleen Neagles' kindergarten class at Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School in Farmingdale was awarded a literacy grant from Scholastic Children's Books, a book publishing company that offers a range of products to primary and secondary schools. Scholastic seeks to educate and entertain youth with an assortment of reading materials. The grant from Scholastic has helped Neagle build up her classroom library by providing her classroom with various reading materials, including books and CDs. Having a library where students can engage in reading helps them develop social and oral skills. In the library, students interact by reading stories to each other and having conversations about the books they have read. The dialogue exchanged between students helps improve the conversational skills in those of whom English is not their native language. The grant has provided an opportunity to share in the love of reading.
